(HOPE FOR
ORPHANS, SKILLS through TRAINING ASSOCIATION)
HOSTA is a Kigali, Rwanda based
organization which offers Health Education and health care, and training in
sustainable agriculture, literacy and Economic Development. HOSTA produces
‘train the trainer’ publications and sponsors workshops and conferences designed
to support rural development efforts. HOSTA also houses and supports numerous
children orphaned by the 1994 genocide and ongoing AIDS-related deaths in
Rwanda. HOSTA proactively addresses the prevalent problem of illiteracy -- one
of the most pressing challenges facing orphans in Rwanda. The effects of
illiteracy are many and the major cause is poverty.

but the
greatest of these is charity."

Hope
for Orphans, Skills through Training Association was
born to address the increasing demand for child headed families to acquire
vocational skills. Rev. Jackson founded HOSTA.
The purpose of the
vocational training Institute is to release the potential of literate youth in
order to change and transform lives through sustainable, integrated vocational
skills.
HOSTA equips the youth within the community and in the church to be self
reliant through training as tailors, computer training, handicraft and art work
design.
The youth will become community leaders with viable vocational skills
and Godly wisdom, enabling them to effectively address the numerous problems in
Rwanda and beyond its borders.
The
Vision
of HOSTA is improving the quality of lives for orphans in Rwanda.
HOSTA is building a secure future full of opportunities, choices,
and options for Rwandan orphans. The United Nations convention
on children's rights defines every human below the age of eighteen
as a child. Children need special care, protection, shelter,
love and guidance which can be uniquely provided by parents.
Orphans must look to responsible adults to guide and develop their
personalities and character so that the community as a whole is
healthy. HOSTA, as a concerned organization, will help to
ensure Rwandan orphans receive the protection, love, care and
guidance they so richly deserve.
Vocational
Training
Hope for Orphans to Skills and Training has supported the
development of numerous child-headed families by providing vocational training
in tailoring, embroidery and art work design. More than 200 child- headed
families have directly benefited from vocational training. HOSTA has also
empowered families where these children live with relief items such food. This
has been in partnership with the World Food Program.
Health
HOSTA has received funding from UNV and TROCAIRE.
Funds have been used to purchase health center equipment for children, including
a laboratory. Additional funding is being sought to support the
administrative cost of running the health center. HOSTA faces challenges in
paying for basic medications and preventative health care, and an ever rising
demand for services.
HOSTA
is planning a Children's Village to support the needs of children
orphaned by AIDS/HIV and the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda. The
Children's Village will support children in Mutara prefecture and
Kigali.
Caregivers
in extended families will also receive support. HOSTA will
encourage unity and reconciliation among victims of genocide who often
must live among the perpetrators of genocide.
Orphans will be protected from child labor and other
abuse. A spirit of dignity, peace, tolerance, freedom,
equality and solidarity will be nurtured and developed in support
of self-sufficiency and economic independence.
Income generating projects, such as the successful Maize
mill project, independent funding and private donations support the
Children's Village.
